Heavy Mental

Seeing as how no one has talked on this in great detail, I've decided to walk you guys through the mental aspect of SC. It's things like this that I don't consider necessary to be up on the page, but that's because it's second nature for me. So I'll try to help you guys understand the mind set and the focus I use to play SC. Hope it helps.

Prior To The Game

Before you go into a game, there is a certain mentality that you MUST have to win. If you're playing a competitive game, then you need to make sure that you're sure of your abilities. Going into a game w/ the attitude of " I hope we win..." is gonna get you killed. Especially against players who have a reputation for being good. What you've got to tell yourself is you're going to win, regardless of your opponent. My current mind set is one where I tell myself: " Shen and I are gonna roll these kids, and if they put up a fight, they're just extending the time of the game. No matter what, this game is already ours." While this might not always be true, it's the mentality I have. They may know the level better, or have more experience w/ that race...yadda yadda. Regardless, we're gonna win.
The reason I have this ability to think like this is because SC is just a game to me. Win or lose, I'm going to have fun. Some people get real serious about SC. They base who they are and their value as a person on their rank on the ladder, or their B.net record. I don't understand this, but I know a lot of people out there think like this. I can sum up my mentality like this. If I'm on my game, then no one can effect the outcome of the game but me. My opponent can try, but if I'm playing up to my potential, he's at my will. Some people may think this is cockiness, but I remind them that this is the same attitude Michael Jordan and Bruce Lee have. I look at them in high regards as both are the epitome of their respective fields. They own their opponent before each confrontation. It is this will to win that I admire. I find that a positive mind set can change a losing play into a winning one.

To Talk Or Not To Talk

You all know them. Those peeps who MUST talk trash to feel good about themselves. There is a difference in my mind concerning the 2 different types of talking trash in SC.

One type ( The type that I do..) is done simply to have fun. I do this w/ my clannies. You can ask Mike-E and Courg@r, as well as Shen. When we're playing a game, and you're within talking or yelling distance from me, expect to hear me talking smack throughout the game. That's just me. I have fun doing it. I also love it when someone talks smack back. Shen and I are so bad, at the Gathering, we'd be ON THE SAME team and STILL talk smack to one another. Smile We just have fun doing it. I love to play w/ peeps like this, because it adds to the fun that you have while playing SC.
The second type is used to put someone else down. I've heard these people called: lamers, trolls, trash-talkers...anything under the sun. I just call them peeps who talk head or peeps who talk smack. It's cool w/ me if they have to do this. I feel confident enough about my abilities, that I don't NEED to talk trash in this way. I feel my skills speak for themselves. I may try to play w/ someone's head by talking trash, but I in no way mean to put them down. Again, Jordan and Lee do the same.
Game Time

Time to roll. When in the game (Lets assume team games, since I think they're more fun and take more skill) work with your partner right from the start. You're going to have to both look for your opponent so you can jump on the offensive right away. You're going to have to attack hard and first. You CAN survive the first double attack, but it's much better to give than to receive ( Thanx Mom...). Your mentality should be one of offense. Don't worry about constructing a good defense, if you're on offense, you don't need a defense. Talk w/ your partner. Attack and defend together. On rush maps like Hunters, try to control the middle if it's possible.
When controlling your game, keep a cross check going. Look from Peons, to your buildings units (Zergs, Marines, Zealots etc) to the Mini Map. Keep exploring all game. If you focus on these 3 things you're gonna do much better then if you're ALL scouting, or ALL

Conclusion

This is just a small set of things that effect your mentality. Your attitude can affect the way you play. Think positive and think like a warrior. Since this is my last week of work, I'm going to work on " Chaplan's 2 on 2 Bible ". It will be a series of posts dealing w/ 2 on 2 games on land and water, using any of the 3 races. It will be VERY DETAILED so I hope you guys look forward to it. As for now, make sure your mind set is that of a winner.
